Welcome to Iksan City


Iksan (익산시, 益山市, add.mountain.city) is a city in Jeollabuk-do, a short distance away from the provincial capital, Jeonju (전주). It used to be known as Iri (이리시, 裡里市). In the 1990s it  merged with Iksan County (Iksan-gun). The population as of 2004 was 324,533, including:

  • 322,378 Koreans and
  • 2,155 non-Koreans.

The railway junction is located at the point where Jeolla and Gunsan Lines meet the Honam Line, and is served by frequent train service to/from Seoul, Daejeon, Gwangju, Mokpo, Jeonju, Suncheon, and Yeosu.

Iksan is located at 126°51′∼127°08′ East, and 35°52′∼36°09′ North. The distance from north to south of the city is 31.65㎞. To the east of the city is the county of Wanju, to the west is the city of Gunsan, to the south is Gimje and to the north is the city of Nonsan.

Thre are a number of small hills or mountains in the city such as Ilchibong (일치봉, 133m), Hamnasan (함라산, 240m), and Manghaesan (망해산, 230m).

The average yearly temperature for the city is 13℃, the average in January is -0.2℃, the average in August is 25.6℃, and the average yearly rainfall is 1,200∼1,300mm, putting it in the southwestern coast climate region. The first snow generally falls during the middle of October, and the final snow around the middle of April. There are 180~190 days without frost per year.
